Tom Ford enjoyed a great run in last year’s event, finishing runner-up to Mark Selby. This season he made it through to the last 16 of the recent China Open, going down 5-3 to Mark Williams. He registered a notable 5-2 defeat of John Higgins in the last 32 and a 5-1 win against Matthew Selt in the previous round. He is a best priced 66/1 to go one place better than last year.
Shaun Murphy has won this event twice, in 2008 and 2009 and also finished runner-up to Ali Carter in 2015. After a poor start to the season he had a great run in the China Championship, making it all the way to the final; going down 10-5 to Luca Brecel. He is a best priced 8/1 to win this year’s event, which doesn’t seem that great in such a big field but he does look to have a fairly easy opening in his part of the draw.
I am also tempted by the winner of the China Championship, Luca Brecel who won final frame deciders against Ronnie O’Sullivan and Li Hang before going on to defeat Shaun Murphy in the final. He has shortened in betting markets since that win but he’s available at 25/1 and has won both matches against Murphy this year.24 Aug 2017
